Dale Welty - Black Rock Champ!!!

With the engine wearing down, blowing smoke, but hanging on... Dale Welty stayed within two spots of Dave Dubois to win the Late Model Championship at Black Rock Speedway Friday night. Car Owner Steve Kent and crew had their work cut out for them heading into the event with a three point lead. Dale started third in his heat, while Dave Dubois started on the poll of his heat. At Black Rock they dish out points for the heat races, so a total of seven points were on the line for the winner of their respective heat. Dale made a dash for the front in his heat race, hung the 92X on the cushion and won. Dave Dubois was cruising to an easy heat win when he cut a tire with two laps to go. Dale ended up having a seven point cushion going into the feature.
In the feature there was a lot of scrapping to get to the front. Dubois started behind Welty, but made his way up to second place. Dale hung on to fourth place holding onto the points lead. On Lap 19, Dale said that he could feel the hard worked engine getting tired and had to throw it into the corner a little harder. Dale threw it just a tad to hard, got loose, but kept his foot in it until the car got straight again to finish fourth and win the Late Model Championship.
Dad and I made the trip up to Dundee, NY to take in the exciting night of racing and meet the driver and crew. Dale Welty is a super class act who started racing Big Block Modifieds when he was 16. He really knows his set-ups and has figured out how to win and compete on any budget. He said we built a strong motor that really lasted over the long race season. That's another Championship for the "2BBL King". Incidentally, up at Black Rock, the Late Models run a 2BBL Carb similar to the Pro Stocks in Central PA. This one had just enough.
